You and Otoya were playing kick the can along with the other kids in the orphanage and it was time to hide from a girl who was "it."
"____-chan! Follow me!" eight year old Otoya took you hand and started to run with a big smile.
"Oto kun! Where are we going?" You giggled.
"You'll see!"
Moments later, you arrived at a hill with a big tree. It was close to the orphanage so you weren't as worried... Until Otoya began to climb the tree.
"Oto-kun! Be careful!"
"Its okay! Come on!" He motioned you to climb up with him. Despite your slight fear of heights, you gave in. Branch by branch, you finally caught up to the red head. He moved over and you sat down next to him.
" Hey, ___-chan! Look!" Otoya pointed ahead of you two.
"So pretty!!" you started to kick your feet back and forth as you took a glance at the scenery. The buildings, houses, etc,were like little homes for ants!
The sunset was probably the most beautiful you've seen yet. There were strokes of clouds painted across the never-ending canvas of pink and orange. A big smile full of happiness slowly spread across your face. You giggled. You totally forgot about your surroundings and the game.
Otoya on the other hand was smiling as well. Not because of the scenery, but because you were, well, smiling! You were a new orphan and lost your parents so you were always frowning. You never played with any of the kids nor smiled. When Otoya finally talked to you, you opened up and even pulled pranks with him on almost everyone.
It took you a while to realize that Otoya was still with you. When you looked to your left, he was staring at you, as if he was daydreaming about you.
"Oto-kun? Hellooo?" You said as you waved your hand in front of his face.
"Huh? What?" Otoya snapped out of it.
"Haha nothing, Weirdo." you said with a smirk.
"Ehhh! I'm not weird! You are!" "At least I don't stare at you for a long time!" you retorted.
Otoya pouted and turned his back to you with a big "humph."
"Ah come on, Oto kun! I'm just kidding, you're not weird!" You wailed, hoping he wasn't upset. Otoya turned around with a blank expression, which soon transformed into a smile.
"I know."
You felt better. Otoya started to laugh and you joined in. There wasn't a care in the world.All of the sudden, Otoya stopped laughing and felt his forehead.
"Rain?"
"Huh?" You questioned before looking up to the sky. It was dark and cloudy, looked like a storm was coming very soon. What happened to the beautiful scenery from moments ago?
"Let's go back, ___ chan."
"Mhmm."Slowly and cautiously, you and Otoya climbed down the tree. Luckily, you two got down in time before the rain came down harder.
"Otoya kun! ___ chan! Where did you go?" The voice sounded familiar to you.
"Oto-kun, run faster! Sensei is looking for us!" you said while laughing.
"Are you kidding me? I can go WAY faster! Catch up if you can!"Otoya bolted ahead of you. You sprinted as well and tried to catch up to your best friend. When you did, it was a natural instinct to race the short distance home.
"I win!!!" You shouted as you raised your arms up in victory. You were pretty surprised, actually. Otoya came soon after. He was panting and put his hands on his thighs, trying to catch his breath.
"Done need to rub it in...."
"Otoya kun, ___ chan! Come inside before you catch a cold!" Sensei called.
"Okay!" you and Otoya chimed in unison. You and Otoya walked in the building, leaving water all over the place. Sensei quickly gave them towels to dry off and sent them to take baths. After your's and Otoya's baths, everyone got hot chocolate and cookies. It warmed up your tummy and was so delicious!

"Wow, it's raining hard, huh?" Otoya said as he looked outside the window.
"Mhmm..."
"I wonder if there'll be thunder..." Otoya said.
"I hope not..." you murmured. You looked worried and scared. Otoya kind of caught on, but brushed it aside.
'Maybe its nothing...' he thought.
"Okay everyone it's getting late, time to sleep!" sensei called.
"Okayyy."
Later that night, the storm raged even harder. Occasionally, there would be crackles of thunder and flashing lightning. But, all the children were sound asleep, except for one, and that was you. BOOM. You screeched and shoved your head under your pillow. You hated thunderstorms so much! You always feared the lightning you or the building would get hit, and the thunder wasn't exactly music to your ears.
"Oto kun?" you called out to the person a bunk beneath you.
No reply..
"Otoyaaaa are you awake?" You rarely call him by his first name. When you did this, something was up. You could hear the little movement coming from his bed.
"Yeah... Why, ___ chan?" Otoya replied. He sounded sleepy.
"I can't sleep.... I'm scared...." you whispered.
"Huh? Why?"Just then, there was another boom and a flash of light following soon after. You screeched again and that answered Otoya's question.
"I-It's okay, ___ chan!" Otoya said to reassure you.
"Mmm..."There was silence in the room, and all you could hear was the rain from the outside.
"O-otoya?"
"Mhmm?"
"Can I sleep with you?"(sorry that sounds sort of weird... but you're supposed to be children so its okay XP)
"Okay!"
You smiled as you took your pillow and Teddy bear and climbed down the ladder. Otoya moved over and invited you into the sheets. Once you climbed in, Otoya turned over so he was facing you.
"Thank you, Otoya." you whispered. You felt safe and calmer next to him.
"You're welcome,___ chan." he smiled, even though he wasn't sure if you could see it or not. BOOM! You winced and tightened your grip on your Teddy in your right arm.
"It's okay, ____ chan!"
"Otoya??"
"Yeah?"
"Can you hold my hand?" you cried.
"Sure!" he replied. Otoya intertwined his fingers with yours. His hand was so big compared to your's. It was warm.
"I'll protect you, always! I promise! 'kay, ____ chan?" He seemed so... Confident and serious. He sat up and smiled. His smile was reassuring.
"Okay, Oto kun! Thank you... I love you!" You said as you sat up too. You really did love him, or whatever an eight year old thought love was. A big smile and pink spread across your face.
"I-I love you too! ____ chan!" You leaned forward and gave him a peck on the cheek. His face turned tomato red but be smiled. You laid down and Otoya did the same thing.
"Oto-kun, I wanna make a promise!"
"For what, ____ chan?"
"I'll stay with you no matter what! 'kay?"
"Mmhmm! Sounds good!" otoya said.
You suddenly felt really drowsy and yawned. You found Otoya's hand again so you held his hand again.
"Goodnight, Oto kun."
"Goodnight, ____ chan." Almost simultaneously, you and Otoya fell asleep. For the rest of the night, you had sweet dreams filled with your best friend, and hands intertwined.
